Pawleys Island is a picturesque seaside community that is steeped in history. Plantation owners from the 1700’s were deeded land grants from the river to the sea. During the hot summer months they would gather the entire household and move over to the beach to enjoy the cooler ocean breezes and be rid of the relentless mosquitos. Many homes on the island date back to this period.
Pawleys is also famous for its island lore and legend has it that during a pending hurricane, the Gray Man can be seen walking along the ocean to warn residents of impending doom. Another popular specter is Alice Flagg. Alice was engaged to a man that her family did not approve of and was denied his company. It is a story of heartbreak. She later died of malaria and was buried nearby at All Saints Church Cemetery. It is said to this day that she haunts her family home, the Hermitage.
Through the years Pawleys Island has been known as one of the oldest beach vacation destinations on the east coast. People enjoy the area because of its quiet, laid back atmosphere where it’s easy to fall into island time. Spend the day fishing in the surf, shelling, paddle boarding or kayaking along the tidal creeks and tranquil inlet. Evenings are usually spent with family and friends on the screened porch enjoying the fabulous ocean breezes.
There are plenty of things to do off-island. Pawleys mainland is filled with great restaurants, boutiques, and quaint shops. You will love shopping at The Hammock Shops where the original Pawleys Island Hammocks are made by hand. Also be sure to visit The Island Shops, Village Shops, Sweetgrass Shops, Harvest Common and the Shops at Christopher’s where you can find that perfect gift. Pawleys offers great dining experiences at several of its restaurants. Topping the list are Frank’s and Frank’s Outback, Rustic Table, Bistro 217, Chive Blossom and Caffe Piccolo. If you are interested in art you can visit the Gray Man Gallery, the Cheryl Newby Gallery or several local artists galleries.
Spend the day at Huntington Beach State Park where you can stroll along the pristine beaches, fish in the surf, bird watch along the marsh, and view the alligators. You can visit the nature center or Atalaya, the former winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington who left the park and the adjacent Brookgreen Gardens as their legacy. A must see is Brookgreen Gardens where you can spend the day roaming through the botanical and sculpture gardens or visit the Lowcountry Zoo.
Pawleys Island is home to some of the most picturesque golf courses along the east coast. Several have been written up in professional golfing magazines. These courses wind their way along rivers and through rice fields and marshes. Some will challenge even the best golfers. Come try your hand at these Pawleys Island golf courses – Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, Founders Club, Heritage Club, Litchfield Country Club, Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club, River Club, The Reserve Golf Club, Tradition Club, True Blue and Willbrook Plantation Golf Club.
